Making Ravelry More User-friendly
Ravelry has over 7 million registered users and gets around 1.1 million visits
As a frequent Ravelry user and avid knitter, it was brought to my attention by knitting YouTubers who aren’t satisfied with Ravelry's complex navigation. The opportunity arose to fabricate the perfect solution: a website more fluid and user-friendly without sacrificing style.
I took the chance to make this my senior project this past semester, brainstorming and redesigning the entire layout in Figma. With a refreshed look, enhanced accessibility, and intuitive navigation, the new Ravelry aims to inspire, support, and connect fiber artists of all walks of life. Simplifying the new site made it more accessible for even the least tech-savvy or visually impaired user.
Welcome home page
Since fiber artists come from diverse backgrounds and generations, maintaining legibility with a high contrast color palette, gentle on aging eyes, was crucial.
A softer and vibrant palette with a funky typeface was vital in order to give the site a warmer vintage feel that could transcend generations.
Coming back to the basics

Pattern Catalog
Simplifying the clutter for users to find exactly what they’re looking for, eliminating confusion and frustration, was a goal of mine. Nothing is worse than going through a million filters and not being able to see potentially attractive patterns for future projects. Until now.

This new design allows fiber artists to navigate seamlessly through their patterns and have their size and important measurements highlighted to avoid stitch miscounts.

Funky Color Palette
70s-inspired color palette that feels nostalgic with a bit of a modern twist. Easy to distinguish for those with visual impairments, such as low vision, cataracts, and color blindness.

Logo Design
When thinking of a logo it was key to design one that could easily be morphed into versatile styles in order to be placed on merch and or around the website.

Easy buttons that change color based on the page the user is actively looking at, without sacrificing visibility and accessibility.

Typeface Brainstorm
Fun and geometric typefaces that worked harmoniously together, which were easy to read at a glance.
Maintaining Community
Fiber arts are known for their community based nature. From how artists share their patterns on forums, to adult Yarn and Wine Nights. These events are often difficult to locate if you aren’t an active online member of the community. With this new Ravelry design members can easily locate their local events based on their locations and calendar availability.
This new web design was carefully curated in order to optimize user engagement and usership. With sections such as Events and Forum we prioritize that sense of community and support for fellow users.
