Between Stops: A Boston Transit Zine

This project is part of a larger conceptual zine exploring Boston through movement and everyday experience, with a focus on the city’s public transit system. Designed to be pocket-sized, the zine was created for easy, on-the-go use, reflecting how riders interact with the city while commuting. All imagery was pulled from my own camera roll, documenting stations, signage, and overlooked moments to create an authentic, lived-in visual narrative.

The project was designed using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign, combining collage-based layouts with editorial structure. Typography was used to balance personality and clarity, pairing expressive display typefaces such as Machinery Script and Retro Star with clean, functional fonts like Galvji and Helvetica. Together, these choices reflect the grit, energy, and rhythm of Boston’s transit system in a tactile, design-forward format.

Final Zine Cover

The covers use black-and-white photography layered with a deep red tint to reference Boston’s visual identity and the Boston Red Sox, using color as a symbolic rather than literal element. The limited palette enhances contrast and mood, allowing the focus to remain on form, movement, and atmosphere while the red overlay anchors the imagery to the city’s culture and sports legacy.

One cover also features a custom QR code linked to Spotify, extending the project beyond print and into a digital, interactive experience. Branded under J.M. Productions, the QR code reinforces authorship while inviting the viewer to engage with the zine through sound, creating a multi-sensory layer that complements the visual narrative.
